- I've been reading a few bulletins in the UK and apparently the Baycom
- team have gone commercial and are not letting the program circulate
- and then asking for donations from the people who like it and use it.
-
- So getting hold of the manual and program could prove expensive (?)
- and users of previous versions won't be getting a discount
-
- The only place to get hold of it will probably be from the team direct
- in Germany (sorry - I forget the address) as it's not likely to
- surface on any of the popular FTP sites.

- For all you PkGold users, I just learned this week that
- Interflex has discontinued their bbs upgrade policy. This
- was very handy for me to get the latest point fixes,
- especially with all the Pk900 issues that were resolved.
-
- Now they want $15 for a floppy upgrade for the point
- bug fix releases (plus tax if you are lucky enough to
- live in CA). Call them and register your dislike of
- the new policy. Maybe they'll change back.
-
- The product is great, the people there are very receptive
- to suggestions, and the service is exceptional. Unfortunately
- they have taken a step backwards with the new policy.

-
- Thanks for the many replies about the TM-733.
-
- Somebody asked if I turned on the "9600 baud" feature. Yes, I did of
- course.
-
- The two main problems with the '733 are related to the TX:
-
- o) a very long switching time between TX/RX (so you must use TXDelay 30
- or longer, both with AX-25 and JNOS)
-
- o) it is impossible to find a dip-switch setting on the TNC to have a
- good shape of the 9600 baud pulses transmitted by the TM-733. The
- transmitted eye-pattern is really poor.
-
- If you take a look at the diagrams of the '733 you can see that the signal
- to be trasmitted (entering the DATA socket) passes so many stages, the
- same path as the mic-signal does. Until now all the equipment I modified
- for 9600 baud, must have the TX-data signal connected directly to the PLL
- varicap or it won't work at all. Instead, on the 733 there's a specialised
- IC where the modulation/data enters the same pin. This will surely work
- for 1200, but *not* for 9600 !
-
- I have no problems at all on the RX side, although I didn't check with
- the satellites but only on terrestrial TCP/IP (JNOS) and AX-25.
-
- The rest of the radio works well.
-
- I'll try to return the equipment back to the dealer...
-
- Thanks for the attention.
-
- 73's, Giovanni IT9XXS.

-
- What? You prefer typing more than one or two characters for
- each of your editor commands? Try writing down the keystrokes that
- you use in whatever (god-forsaken) editor you use and see if it's more
- or less cryptic than TECO.
-
- Ah, all these youngsters, thinking that TECO goes all the way
- back to the PDP-11 (Hint: The TX-0 was a one of a kind machine which
- contributed lots of inspiration to the PDP-1 (no, I didn't forget the
- second "1"), and it had TECO (in an early form)), and who think that
- multics was an early (or even good for its time) operating system.
- These whipper-snappers have no sense of history.
-
- Actually, I must confess that I mostly use GNU-EMACS these
- days. (In fact, it's my mail utility, my news reader, my man page
- reader, etc.) But when ever I have to do a non-trivial editing macro,
- I type control-Z at it, a "*" prompt appears in the mini-buffer, and I
- type TECO. (I don't think that FSF is distributing it, but the TECO
- package for GNU-EMACS is available.)

- From: byon@quicksilver.COM (Byon Garrabrant)
- Subject: Send .COM files over e-mail
-
- Send .COM files over e-mail and packet
-
- I have just written a program which allows the transmission of any
- .COM file (less than 40K) over a text based medium, like electronic
- mail, or packet radio. The recipient does not need to do any decoding
- of the text file; simply save it and run it. Text-based mediums such
- as e-mail and packet these do not allow characters which come before
- space (' ', 32 decimal) or after the tilde ('~', 126 decimal), which
- therefore removes 160 of the 256 bytes possible for use by a .COM
- file. This problem is usually overcome by uuencoding the .COM, which
- translates and expands any file to a text-transmittable version.
- However, if the destination does not have a uudecoder, the file
- cannot be converted back to the original form. My solution is a five
- line text based uudecoder and executor, which can be placed at the
- beginning of any uuencoded .COM file. The resulting file can be sent
- over a text based medium, clipped out and saved to a file, and
- executed like any other .COM file. The recipient never needs to
- uudecode it, or even understand what uudecoding is.
-
- To do this, take any 40K or smaller .COM file, and uuencode it
- with any uuencode program (see below). Then copy the resulting .UUE
- file over the original .COM file (you may want to back it up first)
- and load it into any text editor or word processor. Remove the first
- line, which should start with the word 'begin', and replace it with
- my five lines of text-based code. You can also remove the last line,
- which should start with the word 'end', but this is not necessary.
- The first line of the file should begin with four percent signs (%).
- Make sure you save the file as an ASCII or text file, without
- formating information. The resulting .COM file should run the same
- as the original, but be about 33% larger and only consist of text
- characters. You can send this file in an e-mail message or a packet
- radio text bulletin, along with an explanation to the recipient to
- save the file with a .COM extension, remove all lines before my five,
- save as text, and run.
-
- All lines must be terminated with the standard DOS CR/LF bytes.
- The resulting size of any program will be about 33% larger (thanks
- to the uuencoder) plus 355 bytes on top of that (thanks to my program).
- As you can see in my examples, I usually catenate the last line of
- the uuencoded file (a single back quote) to the end of the previos
- line. This works just fine. This program was written from the
- ground up using BRIEF, TASM, and DEBUG.
-
- You are free to use this program, without cost, but if you do,
- please send me e-mail and tell me how you are using it. My primary
- goal in writing this program was for the challange and puzzle aspects
- of it. My goal is to make the stub as small as possible. I
- currently have a creditless version which is 253 bytes long. Anyone
- else interested in puzzles of this type can try and figure out how it
- works. Thanks to Alex Pruss, for planting the seed of this
- puzzle/program in my mind. Any comments or questions can be sent to
